Spring training for KBO League clubs is now just over a week away. Spring Camp, which draws a rough outline of the year, runs from February 1 to early March. Ten professional baseball teams will leave for training camp on the 29th and 30th.

Just a year ago, the United States was very popular as a primary camp site. Last year, 7 out of 10 clubs set up camps in the U.S. mainland. LG, KT, KIA, Kiwoom, NC, and Hanwha set up the first camp in Arizona, USA, while SSG prepared for the new season in Vero Beach, Florida. Lotte completed training in Guam, a U.S. territory.

However, the number of teams visiting the U.S. has decreased significantly this year. Only four teams, including LG, NC, Kiwoom (Arizona), and SSG (Florida), are holding camps in the U.S. mainland. This is the result of a complex effect of the aftermath of a global climate disaster and high inflation. In particular, the weather in Arizona was very unpredictable, with snow falling even though it was a desert climate. In addition, the schedule to return from the United States, which has a large time difference, and then go to Japan and other places for the second field training was burdensome. Of course, the training environment in the United States is very good. In weather with little rain, 3 to 4 sides of the baseball field can be utilized. The reason why LG and NC play their entire schedule in Arizona without distinction between the first and second rounds.

However, the number of teams heading to Australia in the southern hemisphere has increased. Doosan, KIA, and Hanwha are setting up the first camp in Australia. Doosan will set up camp in Sydney, which was its camp site last year, KIA will set up camp in Canberra, and Hanwha will set up camp in Melbourne. Since there is no time difference in Australia, full-scale training can begin immediately. The temperature is also warm. An official from a club that chose Australia explained, “We also took into consideration the high local cost of living and the problem of adjusting to time difference after camp.”

Samsung is heading to Okinawa, Japan again this year. Okinawa is a popular secondary camping destination. Five teams, including KT, KIA, Hanwha, and Lotte, will complete the first camp and move to Okinawa to finish the second camp. The biggest attraction of the Okinawa camp is the practice matches against Japanese and domestic clubs. On the other hand, KT is the only one of the 10 clubs to hold the first camp in Korea. KT chose Hyundai Motors Dream Ball Park in Gijang, Busan, which it visited in 2021 and 2022. A KT official said, “The players’ intentions were largely reflected.” After completing the first U.S. camp, SSG and Kiwoom will move to Taiwan to compete in ‘their own league.’ After completing the camp in Australia, Doosan will refine its game skills in Miyazaki, Japan.
